And is there really any difference between the countless collagen products on the market? With so much conflicting information from supplement companies, social media and high profile personalities, it’s getting harder and harder to know what to believe. COLLAGEN: THE BASICS
Collagen is a protein that provides structure to cells and can be found in nearly every part of the human body, especially in healthy skin, joints and connective tissue. Your body starts to decrease collagen production in your 20s. In fact, you lose about 1% of your collagen every year, so by age 50 you have nearly 30% less collagen than you did at age 20, and almost 50% less collagen by the time you’re 70.
Collagen loss is the number one internal factor that contributes to noticeable signs of aging. Once it begins to break down, the intracellular matrix loses its rigidity and structural support, leading to the appearance of sagging skin and wrinkles, joint discomfort, tendon and ligament stress, and affects eyes, nails, hair, gums, and even digestive health.
COLLAGEN INGREDIENTS ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL
Collagen as a nutritional ingredient can be classified into one of several groups depending on its type, source and manufacturing processes. The most popular varieties of collagen include:
TYPE I: Hydrolyzed — Derived from porcine skin, bovine hide, eggshell membrane or fish, this collagen type is commonly sold as bone broth or collagen powder.
TYPE II: Undenatured, unhydrolyzed collagen — Mostly derived from chickens.
TYPE III: Hydrolyzed — Often derived from bovine sources.
Vegan collagen: A pending scientific development in attempts to meet consumer demand, using genetically modified yeast and bacteria.
NOTE: Vegan collagen is not yet commercially available at the time of this publication. Products that are misleadingly labeled as vegan collagen typically contain no collagen at all, but instead are formulated with common collagen-boosting ingredients such as vitamin C to capitalize on consumer demand.
If you’ve ever heard that ingestible collagen doesn’t provide any benefits, that’s partly true. In their natural state, collagen molecules are too large to be effectively absorbed by the body and are simply digested as proteins in the digestive system.
Hydrolysis is a process that breaks down these large collagen molecules for improved efficacy, so most supplements use hydrolyzed collagen. Type II collagen is the predominant collagen in human articular cartilage, responsible for providing tensile strength to the joint. More specifically, human joints are largely composed of type II collagen, hyaluronic acid (HA) and chondroitin sulfate (CS). HA and CS serve as a matrix filler of the cartilage to generate viscoelasticity to provide lubrication and resistance to compressive and shearing forces. The Biocell Collagen/HA Matrix technology mirrors human articular cartilage and is hydrolyzed using a patented Bio-Optimized manufacturing process to ensure ideal molecular weight for optimal bioavailability. HEALTHY SKIN:
Collagen, hyaluronic acid and chondroitin are essential to healthy skin. Liquid BioCell’s patented matrix effectively replenishes these vital substances, delivering collagen to promote firmer, younger-looking skin, hyaluronic acid for moisture retention, suppleness, elasticity and stimulation of dermal fibroblasts to synthesize all components of the skin and lastly chondroitin sulfate to support healthy skin. Daily supplementation of Liquid BioCellTM Life led to a significant increase in collagen content by 6% in the facial skin and 6000% in the blood after 28 days. Proper circulation is also important for healthy skin. It ensures nutrients and oxygen get to your skin tissue, giving it a healthy glow. One study found enhanced blood microcirculation and reduced facial aging signs after 6 weeks of taking Liquid Biocell. COLLAGEN SYNTHESIS
Chondrocytes are the only resident cells in articular cartilage, responsible for the biosynthesis of all of its structural components. Only hydrolyzed collagen, not undenatured/native forms of collagen, has been shown to stimulate chondrocytes. One study suggests a possible positive feedback mechanism for the regulation of collagen turnover in the cartilage and also generates an important implication as to how hydrolyzed collagen may regenerate the degenerating cartilage. One of the most significant ramifications from these clinical trials was that Liquid BioCell Collagen® could support all of the major types of collagen (I/II/III) found in the body.

INFLAMMATION:
Inflammation is a normal and important reaction to injury or threat, provided it turns on and on appropriately. When inflammation is ongoing, it can wreak havoc in the body. Chondroitin sulfate (CS), an active ingredient in Liquid Biocell and a structural component in the articular cartilage and skin, has been shown to have anti-inflammatory activity. Compared with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (indomethacin, ibuprofen), CS appears to be more effective on cellular events of inflammation than on edema formation, resulting in a beneficial effect on the cartilage, synovial membrane and subchondral bone.
